Just like Back to the Future, Michael J Fox is back on TV for his brand new comedy show on NBC The Michael J Fox Show. The Michael J. Fox Show stars Fox as Mike Henry, a news anchor with Parkinson’s returning to work, and Breaking Bad‘s Betsy Brandt as his wife Annie Henry, relieved he’s finally getting out of the house. The series premiered on NBC on September 26, 2013 and the casting directors are now looking for talent of all ages for several extra roles for the popular comedy. Mike Henry (Michael J. Fox) put his career on hold to spend more time with his family and focus on his health after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. But now five years later, with the kids busy growing up and Mike growing restless, it just might be time for him to get back to work. When I tell people how old I am, they look at me in awe. I’ll be 21 in April, but I usually look like I’m 16. Being tiny tends to do that to people. However, I have a sharp hourglass figure, and I’m corset trained.
Sometimes my friends call me Mary, which also seemed appropriate for my Korean teacher and classmates to call me. “Maryann” is a bit awkward in the Korean language. I know bits a pieces of a few languages and I want to someday be fluent in at least three.
I go to Montgomery College and am transferring to the University of Maryland for a degree in Criminal Justice. My focus will be Forensic Science. If you’ve seen NCIS, you know Pauley Perrette’s character of Abby. I want to be Abby incarnate.
Judging from the sheer diversity in the friends that I have (9+ groups), I’d say I’m a very accepting, friendly person. I can also be very abstract, and people sometimes describe me as eccentric, humble, and sometimes paradoxical. You could also ask me anything and I’ll respond truthfully. Why would I have anything to hide?
I’m also a giant nerd. I love video games, video game music, conventions, science fiction, anime, Dungeons and Dragons (I’m not even kidding), and tabletop and strategy board games. I’m also a member of the Gamer Symphony Orchestra at the University of Maryland where I have played guitar for four years.
My inspiration for acting came at a young age from Shirley Temple, Elisabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland. I am a 64-year-old labor and litigation attorney admitted to practice in Illinois and California. I also am a 16-year-post-diagnosis Parkinson’s patient of Dr. Christopher Goetz at Rush in Chicago. I maintain a fairly full-time practice, which recently caused Dr. Goetz to comment that I send the same message to clients, judges, and opposing counsel that Michael’s show sends to its audience – that the physical, mental, and emotional hurdles of Parkinson’s can be overcome and the work life of a professional maintained at the highest level. (For 2013-14, I have been named a U.S. News Tier 1 Best Lawyer, a Martindale Hubbell AV Preeminent Attorney, a Chicago Tribune Top Lawyer, and an Illinois Super Lawyer). I think it’s great that Michael’s message is delivered in a first-rate comedy, without any hint of self-pity or melancholy. Michael’s occasional self-mocking also works well. Parkinson’s symptoms and medication side effects sometimes make us look funny – my efforts to carry a bowl of soup across a room or keep a drink I’m holding at a cocktail party off myself and those around me is true slapstick, as is any attempt at pouring liquid from a pitcher into a glass. Laughing at such faux pas is not disrespectful – laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.
Quite by accident, I came across the announcement that “the casting directors are now looking for talent of all ages for several extra roles for the popular comedy.” It occurred to me that there might be situations in which Michael would interact with another long-term Parkinson’s patient, and it might be difficult for an actor without the condition to fake it. If that is the case, I’d be happy to audition. My acting experience is limited to a few school plays, but I’ve litigated cases in 38 states, so I’m comfortable speaking before an audience.
