WE tv has gone through several formatting changes since its launch in September of 1997. It has gone from being known as Romance Classics during the late 90’s to WE: Women’s entertainment during 2001 to 2006 and finally WE tv from 2006 to present. Romance Classics focused mainly on Romantic dramas and comedies, and television miniseries; very similar to its sister network AMC and was initially a commercial free broadcast. When Romance Classics was rebranded and named WE: Women’s entertainment it modified itself to take on an ad-supported general entertainment format. Then in 2006 it was renamed WE tv and the format transitioned towards reality shows. Giving us such reality cult classics and guilty pleasures as “Bridezillas”, “Secret Lives of Women”, “Amazing Cakes” and “My Fair Wedding with David Tutera”. Then giving us an exclusive look into the lives of R&B powerhouse songstress Toni Braxton and her sisters with “Braxton Family Values”. During its transformation WE tv has never lost site of its target audience, Women.
In June of 2014, a casting call for WE tv was announced as it was rebranding the network’s image to be male inclusive. Soon after this confirmation the network premiered its first original scripted series “The Divide” created by Richard LaGravenese and Scandal’s Tony Goldwyn.
“As We tv moves firmly into scripted programming, we are committed to presenting distinctive and engaging stories to today’s savvy TV audience.”
