M. Butterfly is an upcoming Broadway theatrical revival of a classic play. The show will be produced by Steve Traxler, Nelle Nugent, Ben Feldman, and Kenneth Teaton. It will be directed by Julie Taymore. Script of the play has been written by David Henry Hwang. It will be played during the end of February next year, while rehearsals will be conducted in the month of January.
Actors that apply for the role have to read from Sides that will be provided at the audition. The audition of the play will be held on August 29th and 30th 2016 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Rene Gallimard
- Male, any ethnicity
- Age between 30 and 50.
He had a love affair with a Chinese Opera actress for many years. At the start of the play he has insecurities of his masculinity, but later an affair with ‘Madame Butterfly’ elevates and empowers Gallimard. However, he must now face his self-delusion and the tragic nature of his love as the truth has come out.
Marc (aka Man #2, Agent #2, Consul Sharpness)
- Male, Caucasian
- Age between 20 and 40.
Song Liling
- Female, Asian
- Age between 20 and 40
- An ability to sing counter-tenor
- Good mover and excellent singing skills.
About the character: Song Liling is a Chinese opera singer who has an affair with Rene Gallimard, the French diplomat. However, it later turns out she is a spy and a cross dressing male.
Helga – Woman at Party
- Female, Caucasian
- Age between 30 and 40.
About the character: Helga is the daughter of an Ambassador, and wife of Rene Gallimard. She has a charming and pleasant personality, and likes socializing, order, and keeping up appearances.
Comrade Chin – Suzuki
- Female, Asian
- Age between 20 and 40.
About the character: Comrade Shin is a communist functionary from China and belongs to a peasant family. As the handler of Song Liling at the party, she finds him as well as her assignment distasteful. She is a true advocate and believer who feels empowered by the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
M. Toulon (aka Man #1, Agent #1, Judge)
- Male, Caucasian
- Age between 40 and 60.
About the character: M. Toulon is boss of Rene Gallimard, and French Ambassador to China. His daughter Helga is married to the Gallimard. He drinks a lot, likes to gossip, and is proud of his diplomatic status. But in the end he proves cowardly.
Renee – Pinup Girl
- Female, Caucasian
- Age in the 20s.
About the character: Rene is studying Chinese in Beijing. She is from Sweden and is proto-hippie with a free spirit exploring sexual liberation and cultural exchange.
